๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸŒ>0๏ธโƒฃ: Part Two Complete

At last, the first draft of part two of my next novel, Two Earths Are Better Than None, is complete. It's still called Bridge The Schism, but most of the chapters were renamed, and there was an extra one thrown in for good measure:

  • Gathering the Fellowship

  • Hobson's Choice

  • Food for Thought

  • Connecting the String

  • Strengthening the Bond

  • Permanence is Not Enough

That last one sounds like it's a James Bond movie. Definitely not. In total, it came to 26,000 words, giving 37,000 words on the novel overall so far. Coming along nicely.

There are still five parts planned, and the contents of the last couple are starting to solidify. I'm expecting part 3 to be about the same length as part 2, as will one of parts 4 and 5. The other will be shorter, like part 1, but I haven't decided which yet. There are two places for a sensible split, but I'll only decide which feels right when I'm closer.

Part 3, Weave the Skein, is planned to include six chapters again, tentatively named as follows:

  • A Fellowship Renewed

  • Ghost World

  • Speed Dating Elves, Dwarves and Hobbits

  • Connections and Disconnections

  • Remembering the Caliplex

  • Exploring Asperna

This is where the story starts to expand, both in cast and location. A few people have been left behind, and more will soon become friends once Mason decides who can be trusted. The decision is harder when most of them are exotic aliens.

Before that, I've a kitchen to decorate. It's the last room left, and I don't want it hanging around much closer to Christmas. Then, it'll be time to attack part 3.

Yes, I'm still playing with the typography on the front cover. And yes, I know it's getting worse. Sigh.

As this is probably my last post this year, I hope you all have a great Christmas and a wonderful New Year. It can't be worse than this one, can it? Although I said that last year. And the year before.

P.S. I'm more active on Mastodon than Twitter these days, now that the latter has become a Musk-ridden hellscape. An icon at the bottom of my site links to my Mastodon account @Mark_W_White@mas.to. It's a much friendlier place.

My thoughts on Musk have evolved and deteriorated dramatically over the last year. I've ended up adding a running commentary at the bottom of my blog post about him from last year. Warning: includes the phrase "egotistical man-baby".

[Update: 18th December 2022]

You know I said above that the first draft of part 2 was complete? Well, I lied.

I started writing the first chapter of part 3, A Fellowship Renewed, left the characters to do their own things for a bit to set things up nicely for the rest of the part, and they went and did something completely unplanned. Well, it was sort of planned, just not yet. They had their own ideas though.

By the time I'd finished, the chapter had no place being in part 3 but worked much better as the finale for part two. So A Fellowship Renewed is now part of a seven-chapter part 2, which now totals 30,000 words.

I'm going to need to tweak my plans for part three a little to take into account all that misbehaviour, but nothing major. Part three will now have five chapters. Probably. Possible. Well, anything could happen at this stage. You'll find out next year, once I have a clue about how to get the characters back under control.
